the first inkling that maybe this course may not have been such a good choice after all:

we had a lecture on developmental biology yesterday. nothing unusual, just the usual ramble about finely-controlled vertebrate development, and what happens when you twiddle around with them..

maybe i'm just sensitive, but there's something disturbing about casually mentioning how if a certain gene is induced/ inhibited, or if you do something to the hapless egg, the zebrafish would end up with oh, no neural tube, defective notochord, no head/brain, only one eye (called a squint, so cute) or heck, not even a vaguely-recognizable fish, just a belly piece all by its lonely self.

now you know what all the argument about ethics of human embryo testing is about.
