a couple of days ago, a local paper (or mag, can't remember) published an article about how singaporean bloggers are, for lack of a better word, infantile, compared to say, their US counterparts. over in the land of the free, bloggers' stars rise on the strength of their political commentary and fresh, often real-time take on headline news. one even got a white house pass for the sole purpose of blogging the event.
singaporean blogs on the other hand, seem to focus on the self. here's all about me, my dog, my hair colour, MY woes. right. i'm sure there're informative, heavy singaporean blogs out there, it's just that most singaporeans (read: youths and other people who have time enough to read blogs) have enough with the straits times, today and channelnewsasia revealing disturbing and terrifying graphics and news articles. it's the same with mags- most people browse through cleo and fhm and maybe home & decor, NOT american scientific and fortune, at leisure. call it ignorance or denial or plain selfishness, but i don't want to know how many people died with what horrible injuries in which latest blast where. not what Took said when he was brought to the stand, what the kaypoh audience thought of him. not whether mr durai was right.
2 things to note about singapore's explosion of blogs:
1. it's all to do with statistics. the ones who do vote are those who have the time to vote. who are probably, shall i say, aren't obsessed with politics and stuff, and appreciate the joys of reading light. something like how harry potter is ranked higher than say, war and peace. hence, the reason why singapore's most popular blogs are the ones they are.
2. even great things must have small beginnings. so give it some time, maybe our little thoughts will bloom into more global (or at least island-sized) views.
and that's why i like my infantile way, at least for now. give me xiaxue's frank yet frivolous style, lim buey tor's hooting sessions, mr brown's SNEs and kenny sia's glorious photoshopped pix. ignorance is bliss.
